   Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry

The Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry, Inc. is located on Church Street in the heart of downtown Hartford. The Center provides opportunities to promote a living community that improves the life, dignity, and rights of all people
regardless of religious, social, or economic background, especially the alienated and the poor of the City of Hartford.

The Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry, Inc. is classified as a public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We rely on goodwill contributions, in-kind donations, hundreds of volunteer service hours and charitable grants to support the operational expenses, programs and services of the Center.

Overview of Services

  • We feed the hungry by partnering with the House of Bread located on Chestnut Street in Hartford.
  • We provide a place for children from the North End of Hartford to have fun — keeping them off dangerous streets in marginalized neighborhoods through the Adventure Saturday Mentor Program.
  • We make and serve sandwiches to the homeless and working poor of Hartford 365 days a year.
  • We provide housing, food and support to homeless women in recovery to help them achieve and maintain permanent housing and healthy lifestyles through our partnership with Mercy Housing and Shelter Corporation.
  • We provide health services to the homeless and needy through our Wellness Center on Church Street — a partnership with Saint Joseph College.
  • We partner with social services agencies — Rebuilding Together- Hartford, Inc.; Habitat for Humanity Hartford, Interval House, The Catholic Worker, Youth United for Survival, Catholic Charities, Notre Dame AmeriCorp — to help improve the life, dignity and rights of the human person through action and commitment.
  • A volunteer staff of retired teachers provides one-on-one teaching of ESL (English as a Second Language), reading and math to adults working at or below minimum wage. They attend these classes at the Notre Dame Learning Program located in the lower level of the Urban Center.
  • Our generous meeting space is open to non-profit organizations that would otherwise drain precious resources to rent space for necessary functions.
  • We are a critical downtown site for Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Al-Anon Meetings.
  • Support of more than 1300 volunteers through ongoing contact, gatherings to promote community and careful guidance of new volunteer placements.
